AUSTIN – On March 22, 2016, State Representative Cesar Blanco (El Paso) will host over a dozen stakeholders to discuss the future of long-term care financing in Texas. “As Texas’ aging population continues to grow so do our healthcare costs, and families struggle to care for their parents and grandparents. It’s time we look at new financing models, especially insurance based options to help ensure Texas families are prepared for the inevitable”, said Blanco.

Experts agree our current way of financing long-term services and supports is unsustainable and new policy options are needed to address this problem that impacts families, employers and state and federal payment systems. The group reviewed a recent report by LeadingAge, “Perspectives on the Challenges of Financing Long-Term Care Services and Supports,” which explores alternatives to current LTSS funding models.

“There’s no silver bullet but our state’s Medicaid budget is overburdened, 70 percent of LTSS is covered by Texas Medicaid. Older Texan’s and their families need sensible options to protect themselves from huge costs, and Texas needs to explore creative options to provide relief to the Medicaid Program”, said George Linial, President & CEO of LeadingAge Texas.

Attendees include representatives from groups like AARP Texas, Texas Association of Health Plans, and Texas Health and Human Services Commission. A number of legislative offices also will attend to sit in on the discussion. “We’ve gathered a solid group covering the multiple facets of this issue”, said Blanco. “As we move forward, I’m confident we can work together to tackle this problem and find the best solution for Texas.”
