State Representative Leighton Schubert Champions Tax Cuts  print page

by: Rep. Schubert, Leighton

AUSTIN – The Texas House of Representatives recently passed a package of tax bills, House Bill 31 and House Bill 32, designed to provide meaningful and permanent tax relief to every taxpayer, shrinks the size of government instead of shifting it, and provides permanent relief that can’t be taken away by local government or an appraiser.

House Bill 31 reduces the sales tax rate from 6.25 percent to 5.95 percent, creating the first ever state sales tax reduction in Texas history. House Bill 32 addresses burdensome business taxes by providing a 25 percent across the board franchise tax cut.

"I am proud to have had the opportunity to reduce the tax burden on both individual tax payers and businesses alike," said Representative Leighton Schubert, Caldwell. "As the session progresses, I will continue to work to help property owners further with additional reductions in property taxes."

Over the last several weeks, the Texas House has tackled several other important pieces of legislation that include protecting Second Amendment right through the passage of HB 910.

HB 910 permits licensed individuals to openly carry holstered handguns. HB 910, filed by Representative Larry Phillips, Sherman, passed by a vote of 96-35. HB 910 still requires individuals to take the appropriate course in handgun proficiency, demonstrate this proficiency, undergo background checks, and obtain a Concealed Handgun License.

Representative Schubert represents HD 13 with includes rural central Texas and includes Austin, Burleson, Colorado, Fayette, Grimes, Lavaca and Washington Counties.

Schubert, is a graduate of Snook High School, Texas A&M University and South Texas College of Law, and is a practicing attorney in Caldwell where he lives with his wife Brittany.
