State Representative James White Named to Select Committee on Mental Health  print page

Austin, TX - State Representative James White was appointed by House Speaker Joe Straus to serve on the House Select Committee on Mental Health. This committee will take a wide-ranging look at the state's behavioral health system for Texas children and adults. This select committee brings together legislators from different committees that have jurisdictions that intersect with mental health.

As concerns about mental health rise in Southeast Texas among our returning combat veterans, juveniles and adults in our criminal justice system, and with students in our public schools, Rep. White looks forward to serving on this committee and tackling the challenges facing mental health across the state. "I am humbled for the opportunity to serve the citizens of Texas by my appointment on this important committee. During my five years of service in the Texas Legislature, I've encountered too many grieving family members experiencing a loved one deteriorating with mental illness," said Rep. White. He continues, "Sheriffs are frustrated that their jails are overcrowded with mentally ill Texans diverting resources from public safety. Juvenile justice chiefs sorely need mental health services to provide quality rehabilitative interventions. And, after a decade long combat deployment, we must help our returning veterans heal the emotionally deep and unseen wounds of war. Stretched over numerous state bureaucracies and spending hundreds of millions of dollars, Texans don't see a mental health system that's compassionate or conservative."

The committee will meet throughout the coming months and report its findings and recommendations to the State Legislature. For more information on mental health or the Select Committee on Mental Health, please contact State Representative James White's office at (512) 463-0490 or (409) 283-3700.
