Constitutional Amendments on the November Ballot; Amendment No. 1  print page

by: Rep. White, James
10/05/2015

Austin, TX - State Representative James White encourages Southeast Texans to inform themselves, along with their family and friends, about the upcoming constitutional amendments on the November ballot. It is crucial for citizens to know how these referendums will affect their households, communities, and our State.

The first constitutional amendment on the ballot will increase the amount of the residence homestead exemption from ad valorem taxation for public school purposes to $25,000 from $15,000. This proposed amendment will insure that our senior and disabled citizens will realize the impact of this property tax relief.

Additionally, the proposed amendment also authorizes the legislature to prohibit the governing body of a political subdivision; cities, county appraisal districts, etc. that has adopted an exemption from reducing the amount of or repealing the exemption. Finally, the proposed amendment prohibits the legislature from imposing a transfer tax on a transaction that conveys fee simple title to real property.

"This constitutional amendment is one that leaves $1.24 billion with Texas taxpayers. The amendment, known as Senate Joint Resolution 1, works with Senate Bill 1 to increase the homestead exemption for school property tax. The Legislature increased the states' public school funding so that school districts will not lose funding. This property tax relief will only take effect if voters vote to approve SJR 1," said Rep. White.

Southeast Texans are urged to sign up to vote in the upcoming election before the October 5th deadline if they have not done so already. Citizens may register to vote at this address: http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/reqvr.shtml.
