DALLAS, Texas- Representative Koop announced today the nomination of Dan Holden for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship (TASSP). Holden is pursuing an International Studies degree as a freshman at Texas A&M- Corpus Christi for the 2015-2016 school year. He graduated from J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson ISD.

The Texas Legislature created the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program to provide financial opportunities for students seeking a college education as well as a career in the military through the Texas Army National Guard, the Texas State Guard, the United States Coast Guard, the United States Merchant Marine, or as a commissioned officer in any branch of the armed services of the United States. TASSP awards make a significant difference in the lives of a highly accomplished student, who may receive a $40,000 scholarship with awards of up to $10,000 per academic year for up to four years toward undergraduate education at any Texas University with an active ROTC program.

Holden has distinguished himself throughout his high school career with his excellence in academics, dedication to community service, and commitment to extracurricular activities. Holden is an AP scholar, Orchestra President, a member of the wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jistu teams, and a recipient of his school's Most Dedicated Student Award two years in a row. As Orchestra President, he has represented his peers as Captain for the University Interscholastic League and was also a section leader. Holden's community service includes volunteer work at Second Chance Animal Shelter and Dallas Children's Theater.

"Mr. Holden is an example of a dedicated and outstanding student with a bright future not only in academics, but also through his commitment to serve our country," said Rep. Koop. "I am proud to nominate him for the TASSP scholarship."

For a student to receive the TASSP scholarship, he or she must have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher, have achieved a college readiness score on the SAT (1590) or ACT (23), be ranked in the top 1/3 of their high school class, and must be on track to graduate or graduated high school with the Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP) or the International Baccalaureate Program (IB). Scholarship recipients must enroll in an ROTC and agree to complete four years of training, graduate in no more than six years, and enter into a four-year commitment with any branch of the armed services after graduation.
