AUSTIN - The House International Trade & Intergovernmental Affairs Committee Chairman Rafael Anchia has designated House Bill 4002 for public hearing at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, April 27th. Authored by Representative Burrows, HB 4002 calls for the Texas Legislature, through a joint interim committee to study price discrimination of pharmaceuticals, and its impact on the people and budget of Texas.

Representative Burrows offered the following statements:

"As I look at the continually rising costs of medical care in Texas, and its impact on the State's budget, I believe that we need to investigate what is driving these increases and determine we can do to alleviate the high cost of prescription medications."

"This committee will attempt to answer questions such as: Why does the United States pay significantly more for pharmaceuticals compared to other countries? What can Texas do to encourage Medicaid and Medicare negotiate better prices? Can state and local agencies better negotiate for lower cost medication? And, what is the fiscal impact of these substantial price disparities on our State budget? The study is not asking why pharmaceutical companies charge what they do; rather, it seeks to find out why we agree to pay what we do."

"I encourage anyone or any organization who has concerns about the issue to come and testify or register their opinion in Monday's hearing. This is an opportunity for all Texans who are concerned with, or are impacted by high pharmaceutical prices to have their voices heard."
