Rep. Meyer Supports Conservative Spending Plan Focused on State Priorities

AUSTIN, Texas— Early Wednesday morning, the Texas House of Representatives passed House Bill 1 and took an important step toward finalizing a balanced and fiscally responsible budget for the next two years. After 18 hours of debate and consideration of more than 300 amendments, the budget adopted by the Texas House addresses the needs of our growing state while staying below the constitutional spending cap.

HB 1 invests significant resources in public schools, boosts formula funding for higher education, invests additional state dollars in transportation, and promotes border security and public safety. Most importantly, HB1 addresses these priorities while limiting overall spending growth to less than what is necessary to account for population and inflation increases.

"I am proud that my first budget vote as a member of the Texas House can be in support of a spending plan that remained loyal to our state's conservative principles" said Rep. Meyer. "That we were able to address so many critical funding goals without exceeding the spending cap is a testament to the hard work done by Chairman Otto and the rest of my House colleagues."

Following this vote, HB 1 heads to the Texas Senate. When the Senate passes their version, the two chambers will negotiate those differences in a conference committee and propose a final budget plan for each's chamber's approval.

Representative Meyer represents House District 108, which includes downtown, uptown, near east and north Dallas, including the Town of Highland Park and the City of University Park.
