AUSTIN, TX—Defending the First Amendment rights to religion and free speech, State
Representative Matt Shaheen filed House Bill 1355, mandating a Class A misdemeanor charge and
the removal from office of any city official that uses the power of his or her office to oppress or
intimidate citizens based on their religious beliefs. Speaking in defense of the faith community,
Representative Shaheen said, “This bill will address the disturbing trend of local elected officials
using their office to intimidate and silence people of faith for opposing their radical agendas.” The
bill will likely be heard in the House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence on which, Mr. Shaheen
serves.
