AUSTIN— Today, Rep. Dawnna Dukes (Austin) was reappointed to two powerful committees for the 84th Session and appointed vice chair for the newly created Select Committee on Emerging Issues in Texas Law Enforcement. Dukes will serve as vice chair for the Committee on Culture, Recreation and Tourism (CRT) and will serve for the seventh time on the Committee on House Appropriations. The Appropriations Committee determines the House version of the budget for the state's biennium.

“I am honored to have been selected by Speaker Straus to serve on these committees again,” Dukes said. Texans across the state are relying on us to develop a budget to meet their needs. I will work relentlessly to ensure Texans are equipped with education and healthcare, because those are necessities, not luxuries.”

The CRT committee has jurisdiction over Texas Parks and Wildlife, the Texas Historical Commission, the Texas Commission on the Arts, The Texas Film and Moving Image Commission and the Texas State Library Archives. As a member of the Culture, Recreation and Tourism Committee, Rep. Dukes passed significant legislation creating the Texas Moving Image Industry incentive program. The program brought Austin to the forefront of the film and television industry stimulating the economy in the region with more than 29,600 jobs and expenditures of more than $315 million.

The Select Committee has been charged with investigating and reviewing the training and professional needs of law enforcement in the state of Texas. This includes examining and addressing emerging use of new technologies by law enforcement in policing and community interaction, such as the use of body cameras, drones, and the rise of various information technology collection and sorting systems.
