AUSTIN(January 14, 2015)--State Representative Ron Reynolds (Fort Bend County, District 27) filed today HB 717 which will create single-member districts for the Fort Bend Independent School District Board. This bill will require that each board member be elected in single districts instead of the current at-large system. "The members of our school board need to be reflective of the make-up of our community", stated Reynolds.

"Fort Bend County is growing and changing rapidly, and it has become a very diverse population. With the county now a majority-minority community, we need to provide more opportunities for minorities to be elected to serve on the school board", added Reynolds. In fact, Fort Bend ISD is the most diverse district in Texas. The student population is 29.27% Black, 26.65% Hispanic, 22.46% Asian/Pacific Islander and 19.08% White. Currently there are no African Americans or Hispanics on the board. There is only one minority of Indian descent. Fort Bends' antiquated at-large system is no longer beneficial to the students and families.

Representative Reynolds looks forward to working with his Fort Bend County colleagues in the legislature so that he can implement single-members districts that will be representative of the people in the community.
