Austin, TX - The Texas House of Representative did not meet on Monday in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I had the distinct pleasure celebrating the life of such an inspirational man in my home district at different local events.

On Sunday, prior to Martin Luther King Jr. day I was honored to attend the Annual Men's Breakfast at Mt. Olive Baptist Church honoring the life of MLK. I also attended the Youth Trout Derby in Jasper, Texas. It's always a rewarding experience to see the youth of Southeast Texas competing and enjoying the nature and assets that we all have in southeast Texas.

Monday, I attended multiple local events scattered throughout the district. I had the pleasure of walking the Tyler County parade route with Reverend Cruse and Hadnot. I was also delighted to attend the Silsbee Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade. I am truly impressed with Mame Brown for her exemplary planning that she continuously does for this commemorative event.

While in Silsbee, I also had the opportunity to sit with a group of the local youth to address the economic and social life challenges that they will be impacted with throughout their lives in the future. Our discussion was fruitful and centered around how we could address these challenges head on.

I ended my Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Livingston, Texas at the annual Multicultural Festival. My highest admiration goes to Colonel Daniel for the amount of work that he successfully did for this event, and would also like to thank him for his service to our country.

On Tuesday, January 20th, the State Capitol was abuzz with overflowing elected officials and constituents celebrating the inauguration of the first new Governor and Lt. Governor in over a decade. Governor Greg Abbott and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick took the oath of office for their respected offices on the south steps of the Capitol. The ceremony was very impressive with a flyover by F16 military jets, four tons of brisket served on the west lawn of the Capitol and cannon shots to signal the new Governor had been sworn into office. Following the ceremony, there was a parade along Congress Avenue. I am greatly looking forward to working with the new Governor and Lt. Governor this session to improve the State of Texas.

I was privileged to host constituents from Southeast Texas at the Capitol to take in the various festivities of this historic occasion. Among these special visitors was Dr. Jeffrey Luna of Livingston who specializes in Family Medicine and is affiliated with CHI St. Luke's Health Memorial Livingston.

I was honored with a visit from the Springfield family and their granddaughter to come to our Capitol to witness this historic day. I was proud to provide the Springfields' with tickets to receive the full experience of the day as it commenced.

On Thursday, I had several very productive and very informative meetings on how we can improve not only the people of southeast Texas, but the lives of people throughout our whole state. Redeemed Ministries, an orginization out of Houston, Texas sat with me on the issue of human trafficking. This is a subject that I hold dear to myself and plan to address this session.

Lastly, I would like to congratulate the Jasper Lady Dawg Soccer Team on the fantastic start to their season. I have had the experience of coaching soccer at another local team, Livingston Lady Lions, and I understand the difficulty of this sport and realize that it is no easy task to experience the success that they are having.

The House stands adjourned until Monday, January 26th, allowing members and staff to continue working on legislation, constituent work, and travel to the district.
