Denton County Legislator Ready for Challenges of 84th Legislative Session

AUSTIN – Shortly after noon today, State Representative Ron Simmons took the oath of office for his second two-year term in the Texas House of Representatives. Simmons was among 149 other State Representatives and 31 State Senators who were sworn in today, marking the first day of the 84th Legislative Session.

"It is truly an honor and a privilege to serve the people of House District 65," said Simmons. "Ever since the day I first took the oath of office, my goal has been to consistently make decisions based on the values of my district, and to work tirelessly to study each issue from all perspectives. This will not change in the 84th Session."

For the first time in 14 years a new governor will be sworn in during an inauguration ceremony on January 20th when Gregg Abbott becomes the 48th Governor of the great state of Texas. Texas will also have a new Lt. Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller, Agriculture Commissioner and Land Commissioner. Major issues the Texas Legislature is expected to address this session include transportation infrastructure funding, border security, and public education finance.

Despite the unknowns that come with new leadership and the major issues facing the state, Simmons is confident and ready for the work.

"When it comes down to it," said Simmons, "you have to be willing to the work that the people of Texas sent us here to do. That is why I'm here, to continue the fight for efficient government with prioritized spending, accountability, and transparency for every dollar spent."

The Texas State Legislature convenes biennially (every other year) for a 140-day long regular session. Among the chief responsibilities of the Legislature during this time is to pass a balanced state budget, as required by the Texas Constitution.
