Austin, TX - From a call to ease testing requirements for medically fragile children to increasing the number of counselors in schools to assessing training requirements for school board members, Rep. Mary E. González' education bills reflect a community-based strategy that draws on experienced educators, in-depth analyses by graduate students, and her own research as a PhD candidate.

"I believe in our public education system," asserts Rep. González, "and on efforts to improve through precise, strategic refinements how our students are being prepared to compete effectively in a global economy."

Rep. González' slate of proposals was developed with the assistance of Education Working Groups in both El Paso and Austin, comprising experienced educators from throughout the state. Their field-based counsel enriches the efforts of the ICUSP Education Policy Fellows, a cohort of five graduate students from the Institute of Community, University and School Partnerships. The Fellows have been conducting research and analyses for Rep. González on education initiatives as part of their professional development since fall of last year.

Improving education in Texas is a priority concern for Rep. González. Her legislative agenda for the 84th session already includes twenty bills that reflect an in-depth knowledge of where and how to tweak an embattled system.

"School finance, diversity, technology, STEM pathways, operational issues—all are components of an extremely complex system that has a direct impact on the economic futures of the families and individuals in District 75 and the State of Texas."
