ANCHIA APPLAUDS PRESIDENT OBAMA’S DECISION TO HALT DEPORTATIONS OF 3.5 MILLION IMMIGRANTS  print page

(Dallas) – This evening Representative Rafael Anchia (103) extended congratulations to President Obama for his courageous decision to take executive action on the subject of immigration reform. In tonight’s address to the nation, President Obama outlined a “common sense, middle ground approach” that will grant deferred action to two groups – parents of United States citizens or legal permanent residents who have been in the country for five years, and young people who were brought into the country illegally as of 2010. The government will be able to screen out criminals and allow people to work and pay taxes and in some states, access services and benefits, such as getting drivers licenses, in-state tuition and even health care. The deferred action status, however, does not afford immigrants Green Cards or access to Medicaid or other federal social service programs.

"I commend the President for his willingness to fight for the immigrant community while Congress does nothing,” Rep. Anchia said. “United States citizens should not be separated from their families. The families affected by this action are parts of our community and come to this country to work hard and build a better future for their families. They should not be punished for working hard and trying to realize the American dream while America reaps the benefits of their sacrifice.”

Representative Anchia endorses bipartisan reform at the federal level that conforms to America’s core values, as well as measures that reunite families, promote the rule of law, and encourage immigrants trained in our institutions to remain in the United States and contribute to a prosperous economy. In addition, Rep. Anchia calls on Congress to pass the Federal DREAM Act and create a guest worker program for undocumented immigrants who play by the rules.

“The state of Texas, home to a thriving and dynamic economy, is a prime example of how immigrants fuel the engine of prosperity,” added Rep. Anchia. “I share the President’s view that immigration continues to be a key ingredient of America’s own path to recovery and prosperity. The halt in deportations of hard-working individuals is long overdue and will allow immigrants to come out of the shadows and finally participate in the full American experience.”

Representative Anchia will be available Friday morning to comment on President Obama’s action on immigration reform. To arrange an interview, please contact Liz Zornes at 214-943-6081.
