REPRESENTATIVE TONY DALE FILES E-VERIFY LEGISLATION TO SECURE TAXPAYER DOLLARS AND JOBS FOR TEXANS  print page

AUSTIN – This week State Representative Tony Dale (Cedar Park) filed legislation aimed at ensuring only legal workers in the State of Texas are hired as state employees. House Bill 183 would require that all state agencies, including public higher education institutions, use the federal E-Verify system to determine the legal work status for all potential employees.

“Taxpayers rightly expect that their hard earned tax dollars to be spent hiring only legal residents and not persons ineligible to legally work in the State of Texas,” said Representative Dale. “The State of Texas spends a tremendous amount of money on salaries for direct state employees. The requirement to use the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ E-Verify as a replacement for the Services’ paper-based form I-9 will give the taxpayers confidence that only Texans and workers with a legal status will be recipients of state taxpayer dollars.”

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ website states the following in reference to E-Verify:
“U.S. law requires companies to employ only individuals who may legally work in the United States – either U.S. citizens, or foreign citizens who have the necessary authorization. E-Verify is an Internet-based system that allows businesses to determine the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States. E-Verify is fast, free and easy to use – and it’s the best way employers can ensure a legal workforce.”

“I frequently hear concerns from Texans about the impact on the job market due to the employment of illegal immigrants. I also hear concerns about the impact on our school system and the potential increase in cost to taxpayers due to a higher burden on our social welfare system,” said Dale. “Today when employers make hiring decisions they must complete and submit forms related to legal work status, but identity theft and fake identifications have shot the old paper system full of holes. The modernized E-Verify system, when used by the state, will give an extra degree of confidence that taxpayers dollars are only benefiting legal workers.”

State Representative Tony Dale is a member of the House Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee, the House Select Committee on Child Protection and the House Energy Resources Committee. He represents southwestern Williamson County, Cedar Park, Leander, Brushy Creek, and parts of Austin and Round Rock.
