MCALLEN, TX – Today, The University of Texas System announced that a decision on the location for the proposed administrative headquarters for The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will be postponed indefinitely in order to focus on more pressing priorities, such as providing classrooms and research facilities for students and faculty – a move that will directly benefit not only the campus population but the entire region.

State Representative R.D. “Bobby” Guerra issued the following statement:

“President Bailey has been very sensitive to our community’s needs and understands there are tremendous challenges on the horizon. I commend him and UT System’s leadership and both have my full support moving forward on the new medical school and university. This opportunity is the first time we are connecting the Upper and Lower Rio Grande Valley, and President Bailey needs time to assess and familiarize himself with the area in order to fully meet the needs of the entire region. The UT System has been instrumental since the beginning, and I strongly believe that they are working hard to come up with the best solution for this regional institution to operate successfully. There is no doubt in my mind that the City of McAllen will have a major role in UTRGV, whether by way of new research facilities, classrooms, or administration offices. I am pleased to have seen such tremendous support and participation from our local cities. It is for the betterment of South Texas to collectively entrust in the leadership of the UT System and UTRGV President Dr. Guy Bailey, along with input from our local community in what is envisioned for our new medical school and university’s future to ensure it succeeds and thrives for many years to come.”

This institution, which will provide an outstanding education to the students of South Texas, Texas, the United States and the world, will also be home to a school of medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research and healthcare.
