AUSTIN, Texas – To combat fraud and improve motorist safety, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) will begin processing all motor vehicle title applications through the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS).

When a vehicle is sold in one state as a good, clean titled vehicle but in actuality has negative information from another state on its title history, a scam known as “title washing” occurs, and this type of scam has been on the rise in recent years. By utilizing NMVTIS, the TxDMV will prevent title fraud, help protect consumers, and improve the safety of vehicles on Texas roadways. NMVTIS produces a title history report that shows where and what states the vehicle was titled in, previous odometer readings and whether it has a brand that could impact the vehicle’s safety and/or value, such as salvage, junk, rebuilt or flooded. The TxDMV will issue the Texas title reflecting the information in NMVTIS about a vehicle.

Texans can do a title check on a vehicle through NMVTIS in order to find out the vehicle’s complete title history.
“It’s always a good idea to do a title check on a vehicle before buying it, but it is especially important now,” said Representative Thompson. “The best way to prevent any dreadful surprises when you go to get your vehicle titled is to perform your own title check before you buy your vehicle.”

To do a title check, simply:
• Get the Vehicle Identification Number of the vehicle you want to buy
• Go to the “Title Check” page at www.TxDMV.gov and look for this icon:
• Have your credit card available
• Select one of the Department of Justice approved title check providers. Prices begin at only a few dollars.
• Follow the steps to obtain the title report.
