AT PROMPTING OF REP. DONNA HOWARD, LCRA BOARD TO WEBCAST HEARINGS  print page

(AUSTIN) — Beginning with next week’s April 16 meeting, the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) will begin live streaming its Austin board meetings over the internet. The move comes following a request from House District 48 Representative Donna Howard, who recognized the significant impacts of LCRA decisions on the lives of Texans throughout the river corridor. In November of 2013, Rep. Howard wrote LCRA Chairman Tim Timmerman to encourage webcasting of the entity's board meetings. The Chairman agreed, as did incoming General Manager Phil Wilson, who made the live webcast of board meetings one of his first priorities. This virtually cost-free development will increase transparency, provide greater opportunity for public participation, and allow citizens throughout LCRA’s large geographic service area to observe board deliberations without having to take off of work or make costly travel arrangements to attend the Austin board meetings in person.

“The LCRA’s decisions impact cities and industries across a wide area, but this is a common sense development that both upper basin and lower basin water customers can agree on,” Rep. Howard said. "Citizens and taxpayers have a right to know that their government will make it as easy as possible for them to participate in the process they are paying for.”

Since taking office in 2006, Rep. Howard has made transparency and citizen access one of the hallmarks of her career in the Texas House. In 2009, she passed legislation requiring the State Board of Education (SBOE) to live stream its board meetings, which is current practice. The bill also mandated the creation of an archive of all past SBOE meetings housed on the TEA website.
