State Representative Helen Giddings (Dallas), was honored Wednesday, February 19, 2014, by the Texas Black Film Festival for her profound interest and contributions in the arts. Giddings applauded the Texas Black Film Festival, for the work the organization is doing do raise awareness in exposing film makers to industry resources, in displaying work that expresses the African American experience.

Giddings expressed, "My participation in the arts community has been enormously enjoyable and require no recognition. Nonetheless, I am greatly appreciative, deeply honored, and energized anew."

Giddings opened the movie premier, in her honor, with the showing of "Girls in the Band" produced by Judy Chaiken, presented by Women in Film-Dallas. Giddings explained,

"As an advocate for the arts - I believe we have a real opportunity and a real responsibility to promote diversity and practice inclusiveness. There are compelling and moral reasons for us to be inclusive. We can ill afford to write off the creative contributions of African Americans in film. It's essential to have an organization that promotes African American arts and culture year round. Here, in Dallas and throughout Texas, young African American film makers are expressing their rich history and the current presence of excellent black arts presentation and production in film. I believe that a vibrant cultural life includes diverse cultural offerings and that all filmmakers should have an equal opportunity to receive recognition and support from the many available state resources to expand their creativity to the big screen."

Giddings has served on many boards including: the African American Museum, Dallas Symphony Board, Dallas Summer Musicals, Dallas Historical Society, and the Dallas Theatre Center. Her contributions led to the African American Museum naming a room in her honor and the City of Lancaster
