AUSTIN, TX – Today, State Representative Travis Clardy filed House Bill 1213, which allows mental health professionals more options in disclosing information about threats from their patients.

“In the wake of the recent tragedies in Aurora, CO and Newtown, CT, I believe the mental health system in Texas must be addressed. After consulting with mental health professionals in House District 11 and around the state, it is clear that more options are needed for mental health professionals, so that these senseless tragedies can stop."

Presently, mental health professionals in Texas are permitted to disclose information to law enforcement agencies; however, the bill would expand disclosure to potential victims of patient threats. The bill also expands immunity for a mental health professional who discloses this information in good faith.

"I believe mental health professionals should be free from prosecution in the court of law for doing their duty to protect Texans."

Rep. Clardy is currently serving his first term as the State Representative for House District 11, which includes Nacogdoches, Cherokee, and Rusk counties.
