REPRESENTATIVE ERIC JOHNSON FILES LEGISLATION TO PROTECT GLBT EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS  print page

by: Rep. Johnson, Eric
02/11/2013

AUSTIN, TX – State Representative Eric Johnson (Dallas) filed legislation this morning to prohibit employment discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Texans.

"Employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity is reprehensible, but in Texas, it's perfectly legal," said Representative Johnson. "It's time for that to change."

Texas law currently forbids employment decisions made on the basis of a person's race, color, disability, religion, sex, national origin, or age. House Bill 1146 adds sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression to the list, a change that is long overdue.

A poll commissioned by Equality Texas in 2010 shows that a substantial majority of Texans support prohibiting employment discrimination targeted at GLBT individuals. The Legislature should get behind this bill and act on the will of the people to make these kinds of unjust employment practices illegal in Texas.

Eric Johnson represents District 100, which includes parts of Dallas and Mesquite, in the Texas House of Representatives.
