SAN ANTONIO— Today, Speaker Joe Straus (San Antonio) announced that he is issuing an Interim Charge to the Texas House Committee on Defense and Veterans' Affairs to study adopting a Veterans Remembered Flag for the State of Texas and calling on Congress to extend the tribute nationally .

“On the last Monday of every May, Americans gather to pay tribute to the millions of men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country safe.” Straus said. “In addition, more than 1.7 million Veterans are living in Texas. On this Memorial Day, and every day, we should honor these brave men and women, and their contributions to our nation. For that reason, I am commemorating the day by urging the Committee on Defense &Veterans Affairs to report back to the House on steps needed for the State of Texas to adopt a resolution approving the Veterans Remembered Flag.”

Today, 25 states have adopted this flag to honor Veterans and their service. Texas has the third highest Veterans population in the country.

Straus noted that a flag pays homage to our missing in action and prisoners of war. The Veterans Remembered Flag would honor all those who have died in service of our nation or served in the military.

The proposed design of the flag includes star designs on a green field which represents hallowed ground:
