AUSTIN---Speaker Joe Straus (San Antonio) today announced the appointment of Casandra Cascos Ortiz of San Antonio to the Sunset Advisory Commission to fill one of the two public member positions. She will serve along with five state representatives, five state senators, and a public member appointed by Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst.

Ortiz will serve on the Commission in 2012 and 2013 when the Commission will hold public hearings to review 24 state agencies, including the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Texas Ethics Commission, Texas Lottery Commission, Texas Education Agency, Correctional Managed Health Care Committee, Public Utility Commission and Railroad Commission.
Ortiz is an attorney with the law firm of Shelton & Valadez. She has worked with both public and private sector clients throughout South Texas. She previously served as a Research Associate on health care policy issues with the Hogg Foundation. Ortiz received her law degree from the University of Texas School of Law and her undergraduate degree in Communication Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. She grew up in the Valley in Brownsville, Texas.

"Casandra Ortiz will bring a valuable outside perspective to the Sunset process -- asking questions that other Texans should ask about their state government and filling an important role that promotes government accountability," Speaker Straus said. "With her help, I am confident that each of these 24 agency reviews will identify ways for state government to operate more efficiently."
The Sunset Advisory Commission was created in 1977 and is a 12-member body of legislators and public members who are appointed by the lieutenant governor and the speaker of the Texas House of Representatives. The agency's goal is to identify and eliminate waste, duplication, and inefficiency in government operations. The Commission will make recommendations for the Legislature to consider during the 2013 legislative session. In most cases, agencies under Sunset review are automatically abolished unless legislation is enacted to continue them.
