Austin, TX -- Representative Byron Cook (Corsicana) is reminding constituents of Anderson and Navarro counties who have been adversely affected by the 2011 wildfires that they have until January 6, 2012 to apply for Individual Assistance. Funding has been set aside for citizens whose homes or businesses have been damaged or destroyed by the fires.

"The wildfires have had a tragic impact on this state, including on our friends and neighbors in Navarro and Anderson counties," Cook stated. "While there has been an outpouring of generosity and kindness from the community, which has donated time and resources to help victims, many families continue to struggle to recover from the damage and destruction caused by the fires."

Disaster assistance may include grants that help pay for temporary housing, emergency home repairs or other serious disaster-related expenses, such as medical and dental expenses or funeral and burial costs that are not covered by insurance.

Low-interest disaster loans may also be available from the U.S. Small Business Administration that compensate for losses incurred during the disaster that are not covered by insurance or other grants.

Homeowners, renters and businesses in the affected counties are encouraged to register with FEMA. There are three ways that victims can apply for assistance:

• Online at www.disasterassistance.gov
• Via a web-enabled phone at m.fema.gov
• By telephone at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).

Operators are available to assist applicants from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week. After registering, victims are encouraged to call the number above if they have any questions about their application, or if there is a change in contact information or they need to reschedule an appointment.

Cook remarked, "This much-needed support should help wildfire victims rebuild their homes and lives, and bolster recovery efforts of entire communities from the losses suffered from the devastating fires."
