Highest honor given by TAB to lawmakers who helped make business stronger in the 82nd Legislative Session

AUSTIN, TX.- Representative Jim Murphy was recognized by the Texas Association of Business (TAB) with the "Champion for Free Enterprise" award. After each legislative session, TAB awards lawmakers who, through their voting record or the legislation that they file, provide for a strong business climate in Texas.

"It is an honor to be recognized for my work during the 82nd Session by this prestigious, statewide business organization," said Representative Murphy. Murphy not only earned TAB's highest award, but also achieved the organizations highest individual score, along with several other legislators.

During the 82nd Legislative Session, Representative Murphy authored House Bill 701 to extend the margins tax exemption on gross receipts up to $1 million for two additional years. This measure was included in Senate Bill 1, which passed during Special Session. He authored and passed HB 14 which requires a person to exhausts severance benefits before obtaining unemployment benefits. Murphy also authored and passed HB 2581 to allow a successor employer to receive a surplus unemployment insurance credit from a predecessor employer.

“By voting for the interests of Texas’ business, these lawmakers also supported all of the taxpayers of Texas,” said Hammond. “Without a strong business climate, Texas won’t have new jobs, the economy will stagnate and the collection of tax dollars for state and local governments and schools will fall dramatically. For the most part lawmakers understand that, and took the steps needed to ensure Texas’ business climate stays healthy through this biennium.”

The Texas Association of Business will honor Representative Murphy and lawmakers who received the "Champions of Free Enterprise" and "Fighters for Free Enterprise" honors at TAB's Annual Conference held in Austin in February.

Representative Murphy represents House District 133 in west Houston. He serves on the Economic and Small Business Development and Ways and Means committees. Murphy was recently appointed by Speaker Joe Straus to represent Texas on The US Energy Council, the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Task Force on State and Local Taxation of Communications and E-commerce, and the NCSL Committee on Budget and Revenue.
