Austin, TX- On November 9, 2011 at 1:00 pm CST, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will conduct its first ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS).

EAS is a public alert and warning system that leverages the communications assets of broadcasters, cable television systems, wireless cable systems, satellite digital audio radio service providers, direct broadcast satellite services and wireless video service providers to allow the President the capability to address the American public during a national emergency. It also allows state and local authorities to deliver important emergency information such as weather alerts.

Although local and state components of the EAS are tested on a weekly and monthly basis, there has never been an end-to-end test of the system of this scale. The test will last approximately three minutes and will resemble the periodic monthly EAS tests that most citizens are already familiar seeing and hearing.
