Award recognizes leaders for their efforts in promoting access to capital and economic development in states across the country

AUSTIN, TX, August 11, 2011 – Texas Representative Jim Murphy was honored this week with a Champion of Small Business award from the National Coalition for Capital. Representative Murphy and 28 fellow legislators and officials from across the nation were recognized for their leadership at the annual National Coalition for Capital Awards Ceremony on August 8 in San Antonio, Texas. Champion of Small Business Awards recognize individuals for demonstrating leadership in supporting policies and initiatives designed to promote access to capital for small businesses and entrepreneurs, especially those in economically distressed communities.

“This award recognizes Representative Murphy’s important work to preserve and create jobs through access to capital policy that helps Texas small businesses grow and develop,” said Michael Votta, Executive Director of the National Coalition for Capital. “Representative Murphy has demonstrated he is a champion of small business, and his efforts will have an enduring positive impact on Texas.”

“Now more than ever, it’s critical that elected officials do their part to advance innovative access to capital policies that allow small businesses to grow and prosper,” said Representative Murphy. “I am pleased to be among those honored for supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs as they strive to preserve and grow jobs in their communities.”

Also honored that evening were Texas Senators John Carona (Dallas) and Mike Jackson (Harris). Nationwide, 28 state legislators were recognized for their 2011 efforts.

The National Coalition for Capital hosts an annual awards ceremony during the week of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Legislative Summit to recognize individuals for taking a leading role in fostering access to capital for small businesses and entrepreneurs.

During the 82nd Legislative Session, Representative Murphy authored House Bill 701 to extend the margins tax exemption on gross receipts up to $1 million for two years. This idea was included in Senate Bill 1, which passed during Special Session. He also authored House Bill 2580 to extend the Certified Capital Company (CAPCO) program, and House Bill 3374, which would allow CAPCO programs to be decertified and save both the state and programs money.

Representative Murphy represents House District 133 in western Harris County. He currently sits on the Economic and Small Business Development and Ways and Means committees.
