Rep. Parker and Senator Carona honor Italians in Texas through HCR 144

Austin, TX – (Today) Representative Tan Parker announced the successful passage of House Concurrent Resolution 144 which designates June 2nd as Italian Heritage Day in Texas. The resolution was sponsored by Senator John Carona in the Texas Senate and was unanimously passed by both legislative bodies.

The 2nd of June of each year is the anniversary of the Fiesta of the Italian Republic. This marks the day in 1946 when Italy voted in a referendum to abolish the monarchy and to become a republic. Also, this day in 2011 will coincide with the 150th Year Anniversary of the Unification of Italy.

When asked about the legislation, Representative Parker stated, "By proclaiming this day in June as Italian Heritage Day, the state recognizes the important contributions immigrants have made in building Texas communities and the economic, political, social, and cultural achievements of Italian Americans throughout the state. I am proud to celebrate this day with the rest of the state as we reflect and honor the legacy of hundreds of thousands of Texans."

Comites President Vincenzo Arcobelli, the official representative of the Italian American Community in Texas and strong advocate for HCR 144, said, "I am very grateful to Rep. Tan Parker for introducing HCR 144, and for the great job he is doing for the State of Texas, and for assisting in promoting the Italian Culture and for strengthening the friendship between Italy and Texas. My gratitude goes also for Senator John Carona for sponsoring the resolution in the Senate, and to the House of Representative and the Senate and the Governor of the State of Texas for approving this significant resolution. Italian Heritage Day is an opportunity to remember, celebrate and educate future generations about Texas and Italy rich history, because Italy matters for Texas and Texas matters for Italy."

Initially elected on November 7th of 2006, Representative Parker represents both rural and urban parts of Denton County which encompasses the cities of Flower Mound, Highland Village, Pilot Point, Argyle, Aubrey, Krugerville, Sanger, Cross Roads, Krum, Ponder, Justin, Northlake, Copper Canyon, Double Oak, Bartonville, Trophy Club, Roanoke and portions of Lewisville and Southlake.

Serving in his third term in the Texas Legislature, Representative Parker is focusing his efforts on economic development, job creation, further property tax relief, appraisal reform, strengthening border security and immigration policy, promoting fiscally responsible government spending and protecting family values. Parker is the current Vice Chairman of the Rules and Resolutions Committee. He also serves on the Corrections Committee and the Urban Affairs Committee.
