STATE REPRESENTATIVE MARTINEZ RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT H.B. 2  print page

In discussing the current version of House Bill 2, State Representative Armando "Mando" Martinez, District 39, along with other members of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus (MALC), expressed the failure proposed by the bill.

Representative Martinez believes, "We need to research House Bill 2 further and the economic impact it will have on students, as well as the economic impact it will have on the Valley. If any negative repercussions result from this legislation, I expect revisions to be made to ensure that every child in the State of Texas is afforded the equitable education that they deserve regardless of whether they are from the Rio Grande Valley or from North Texas."

By not ensuring that the appropriate amount of money is guaranteed to each and every Texas child, the receipt of exemplary public education is hindered. "The students from the Rio Grande Valley deserve the same equitable education as the students from Highland Park. We need a system that ensures 100% equity, not one that widens the gap between rich and poor, while also leaving 90% of our school children behind."

Representative Martinez also finds House Bill 2 lacking the across the board teacher pay raise necessary to recruit and reward Texas teachers. After all, "They are teaching the future leaders of our cities, our state, and our country. Exemplary education begins with a great teacher in the classroom."
