AUSTIN, TX – Gary VanDeaver (New Boston) was sworn into office as State Representative for Texas House District 1 on the first day of the 84th Session of the Texas Legislature. This begins VanDeaver’s first term in the legislature, having recently retired as a rural educator. He began his career as a high school vocational agriculture teacher and most recently served as Superintendent of New Boston ISD. “I am honored by the trust placed in me by the families and communities of Northeast Texas and am ready to deliver the results they deserve,” said VanDeaver. After taking the oath of office, VanDeaver turned his attention to the work ahead and presented his broad policy goals for the coming year.

“Improving our schools, fostering economic growth, and developing our transportation infrastructure are all important issues for Northeast Texas, and these are among my top priorities,” said VanDeaver.

VanDeaver also emphasized the importance of passing a balanced budget with low taxes, protecting the Second Amendment, and defending the healthcare rights of Texans from federal intrusion. “Texans appreciate freedom and responsibility and rightfully expect their government to defend these values,” he explained.

VanDeaver’s Capitol office will be staffed by two legislative veterans, Trish Conradt and Madison Stewart. Conradt will serve as Chief of Staff, a role she has held previously for members of the Texas House, and Stewart joins the staff from the Texas Farm Bureau to serve as Legislative Director. “I am very pleased to have such an accomplished staff. Providing excellent constituent service is one of my top priorities, and I am confident that our office staff will keep our district well connected with this office,” said VanDeaver.

Two student interns, both UT-Austin sophomore government majors, will also be working during the session. Tyler Levesque is from Mount Pleasant, which is just outside of District 1, and Clayton Carter is from Arlington. VanDeaver said "I am excited to have these two fine young men as a part of our office staff and hope they learn a lot about the legislative process, which will be an invaluable experience as they complete their studies at UT-Austin."

VanDeaver also said he hopes that when constituents are in Austin that they feel free to stop by his office located in the Capitol (E1.310) or to call the office at 512-463-0692 for any information or assistance.
