SPEAKER JOE STRAUS ANNOUNCES HOUSE APPOINTMENTS TO THE JOINT INTERIM COMMITTEE TO STUDY ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

AUSTIN--- Today, Speaker Joe Straus (San Antonio) announced Texas House appointments to the Joint Interim Committee to Study Alzheimer's Disease. Speaker Straus has appointed Representative John Zerwas (Richmond) as co-chair of the committee. The committee members include Representatives Helen Giddings (Dallas), Linda Harper-Brown (Irving), Susan King (Abilene), and Marisa Marquez (El Paso).

“I am pleased to appoint these members to study the impact of Alzheimer's disease on Texas' growing and diverse population," Speaker Straus said. “During the past several sessions, the Texas Legislature has invested in groundbreaking Alzheimer's research, and this committee will build on this work to help meet the challenges of this disease."

During this interim, the committee will study the overall economic and systemic impact of Alzheimer's Disease through 2017, including an inventory of public and private infrastructure and capacity for addressing the challenges of the disease. Additional duties for the committee include identifying funds and systems to support and expand ongoing statewide disease-specific strategic planning through both the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Texas Alzheimer's Research Consortium. The committee was created through House Resolution 1978, Regular Session, 82nd Legislature.
