AUSTIN - Rep. Harvey Hilderbran (Kerrville) filed HB 2294 last week to designate Loop 534 in Kerrville "Veterans Highway."
Rep. Hilderbran has been working with the City of Kerrville on the highway designation. On Jan. 23, the city council approved a resolution requesting legislative approval for the renaming. The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, the Veterans Council, and 9-1-1 were consulted and concur with the renaming. The road is adjacent to the U.S. Veterans Administration Hospital.
"As the son of a veteran, I understand the commitment and sacrifice made by our service men and women," Rep. Hilderbran said. "The renaming of Loop 534 is a way for the state to honor these courageous individuals who have given their lives in the defense of our country. I was happy to work with the city of Kerrville on this legislation."
The renaming of Loop 534 follows a tradition of renaming highways in honor of our military. In prior legislative sessions, Rep. Hilderbran authored bills that designated Pearl Harbor Memorial Highway in Fredericksburg and the 173d Airborne Brigade Memorial Highway which stretches from Kerrville to Bandera.
The Texas Legislature may designate a memorial marker or named marker highway on a state highway system. Once approved, the Texas Department of Transportation will implement a plan to erect the markers.
