Biography

Marisa Márquez was born to El Paso natives Dr. Ricardo Márquez and Gloria Flores in Houston, Texas. Shortly after, her family returned to El Paso, where she attended local schools and graduated from Faith Christian Academy as Valedictorian in 1996. She completed her Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and Business Economics in 2000 from University of Notre Dame.

Marisa remains committed to the El Paso community and has fought hard to increase transparency in local government and passed several statutes having statewide impact. Her freshman session Márquez passed legislation that created the first county ethics commission in the State of Texas. She also worked hard to improve building standards in unincorporated areas; a huge victory for the safety and health of all Texas families.

Representative Márquez has received several awards including Best Freshman Award by the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition, Freshman Excellence Award from the Legislative Study Group, Outstanding Legislator Award by the Texas State Employee Union, Distinguished Service Award by the Juvenile Justice Association of Texas, Friend of County Government by the Texas Association of Counties, and the Best Legislator Award in the 82nd Session by the Texas State Association of Fire Fighters. She is member of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, as well as the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators.

Representative Márquez was sworn into her third term in the Texas House on January 8, 2013. She represents District 77, containing downtown El Paso, UTEP, neighborhoods near Fort Bliss in the Northeast, and across the Franklins to neighborhoods around Coronado High. During the 83rd Legislative Session, she serves as Vice-Chair of the House Committee on Environmental Regulation and is a member of the Appropriations Committee, and also the House Committee on House Administration.
