Biography

First elected in 2006, Susan Lewis King is a fourth-term House Member representing District 71, which is comprised of Taylor, Nolan and Jones Counties. A native of Houston, Rep. King has lived in Abilene for more than 30 years. Her current committee assignments include Public Health, House Administration, and Appropriations, where she is a member of the Article I Sub-Committee on General Government. Rep. King also serves as a member of the House Research Organization Steering Committee and the Chronic Kidney Disease Task Force. Additional memberships are the Abilene Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Abilene Chamber Military Affairs Committee, Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce, the NRA, and the Farm Bureau. King and her family are members of First Central Presbyterian Church where she has taught Sunday school, Bible study and serves as an Elder. Her hobbies include musical theatre and scuba diving.

Former elected office includes the Abilene Independent School District Board of Trustees, where King served from 1998 to 2006 including two years as school board president.

Rep. King is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing with Honors. Prior to moving to Abilene, she worked closely with renowned cardiac surgeon, Denton A. Cooley, M.D. at the Texas Medical Center in Houston. She is co-owner and co-director of Elm Place Ambulatory Surgical Center in Abilene where she is a practicing surgical nurse. Additionally King and her family own a small calf/cow operation in South Taylor County. King has been married to Dr. Austin King for over 30 years and is the proud parent of three grown children and three grandchildren.
