Biography

Mark Strama is married to Crystal Cotti, and the couple has two young daughters, Victoria and Caroline.

In his fifth term in the Texas House of Representatives, Mark serves on the House Ways and Means committee, and the International Trade and Intergovernmental Affairs committee.

Mark is a tenacious advocate for public education as well as renewable energy resources. He places special legislative emphasis on technology in the classroom, early childhood education programs, and extended learning time for at-risk students. He has also championed legislation to make Texas as dominant in the renewable energy technologies of the future as it has been in the traditional fossil fuels industry.

Some of the honors and recognitions Mark has received in his 8 years of service to Texas include:

  • Mark received Honorable Mentions in Texas Monthly's "Ten Best Legislators" list in two of the four sessions he has served; Texas Monthly said "Strama cares as much about others' success as his own"
  • He was named one of the "Top Ten Good Men in American Politics" by the Good Men Project - a list that included four U.S. Senators, three Congressmen, a Governor, and a Mayor
  • He has been named "Legislator of the Year" by the Texas Renewable Energy Association, "Texas Technology Champion" by TechAmerica, and a "Legacy" award winner by the Texas Wind Coalition
  • He was named to the Texas PTA's "Legislative Honor Roll" for his work on anti-bullying legislation
  • Mark was honored with the "Rostow Leadership Award" by The Austin Project, a non-profit organization which recognizes community leaders for outstanding service to local children and families

Prior to running for office in 2004, Mark was a technology entrepreneur who founded the first company to register voters online. More than 700,000 Americans used this technology to register to vote in the 2000 election cycle. Before that, Mark was Director of Programs at Rock the Vote, a non-partisan voter mobilization effort spearheaded by music industry leaders and MTV. Mark also worked on the successful 1990 gubernatorial campaign of Ann Richards, and served as chief of staff to state senator Rodney Ellis.

Mark serves on the Advisory Boards of the Clean Energy Incubator and the Environmental Sciences Institute at the University of Texas. He is also a board member of Challah for Hunger, a national charitable organization of college students. He was a founding board member of Hope Street Group, a non-partisan organization of young business leaders that seeks to achieve equality of opportunity in a high-growth economy. Mark is a product of the Texas public school system and graduated from Brown University in 1990.
