Carol Alvarado is the state representative for Texas' 145th House district, which includes southeast Houston, a portion of the historic Houston Heights and cities of South Houston and Pasadena.

Before being elected to the Texas House, Carol served on the Houston City Council and as Houston Mayor Pro Tem. In 2008, she was elected to the Texas House of Representatives. She serves as Chair of the Urban Affairs Committee, Vice-Chair of the Special Purpose Districts Committee, and a member of the House Rules and Resolutions Committee.

Carol's primary legislative focus has been on economic development, public health, and public education issues. She has championed legislation aimed at strengthening our state's workforce, improving workforce development services, and streamlining Texas' economic incentive programs.

Carol is an advocate for women's health and has authored numerous bills aimed at improving the health care of our children including legislation that would ban the sale of e-cigarettes to minors, increase dental and mental health education in public schools, and remove excessive sugary drinks from Texas elementary and middle schools. She has also authored bills that strengthen Texas' pre-kindergarten programs, increase student privacy, and expand access to career and technology education for our students.

Carol was recognized as Texas Municipal League's Legislator of the Year in 2015 and received the Texas Medical Association's Patient Protection Award in 2014, Texas Affiliation of Affordable Housing Provider's Affordable Housing Hero Award in 2015, and the Harris County Medical Society's Patient Care Champion Award in 2009, 2011, 2013.

Carol is a native Houstonian and a longtime resident of Houston's East End and proudly holds a Masters in Business Administration and a Bachelor?s in Political Science from the University of Houston.

Carol is currently the principal for CA Consulting. Previously, she worked in City Hall as a Senior Executive Assistant to Houston Mayor Lee P. Brown. Her past professional experience includes serving as a legislative assistant to Congressman Gene Green in Washington D.C., and as a consultant in economic and community development in East End neighborhoods.

Carol is a proud homeowner in the Idylwood neighborhood of Houston's East End and attends St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.
