Born and raised in San Antonio, Representative Laura R. Thompson is the daughter of an honorably retired Army Sergeant and public school educator. She grew up in the historic Denver Heights neighborhood, located in the heart of the district she currently serves. District 120 spans the east and northeast sides of San Antonio, as well as other Bexar County communities, including Alamo Heights, Windcrest, Kirby, Converse, San Antonio and Fort Sam Houston.

Representative Thompson is the first Independent candidate elected to serve in over 50 years. As a member of the 84th Legislature, she is the 122nd woman to hold office in the Texas House of Representatives. She is a mother, 20-year entrepreneur, freelance writer, publisher, public relations executive, founder of several nonprofit organizations, and an advocate for children’s literacy.

Representative Thompson is serving on the Transportation and Appropriation Committees. She is committed to continue her support of literacy and education programs, entrepreneurship, technology, and small business.

Representative Thompson is passionate about her Fort Sam Houston community as well and is a strong advocate to support the leadership and the brave military men and women of Joint Base San Antonio. As her symbol of support for the US Armed Forces, Representative Thompson swore in at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at the internment site (Section X, Headstone 466) of her father, US Army and Korean War Veteran, Sergeant Clarence E. Thompson. Her ceremony was officiated by Texas Justice Jason Pulliam, Fourth Court of Appeals.

Always willing to help, Representative McClendon served as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign on December 20, 2007. During her 30-minute shift, Rep. McClendon collected over $2500 from Wal-Mart shoppers. Wal-Mart pitched in by matching the amount collected by the Representative, bringing the total raised to more than $5000 to help make more than 7000 Bexar County needy children happy in December during the Christmas Season.
Representative McClendon was honored on September 10, 2007 with the Texas Advocacy Award from the American Cancer Society. The award was presented at the Texas Pain Summit meeting in Austin by Dr. Larry C. Driver, Professor of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, recognizing her for "outstanding legislative advocacy for the quality of life of cancer patients."
